Kitchen Fillers Installation in Inland Empire, CA

When your Inland Empire, CA, home is due for a cabinet refresh, you have many options. Ordering cabinets and having them installed or doing it yourself is now an option. Many choose a DIY approach to save on their Reno budget. However, without some finishing touches, they can end up looking like you did it yourself.

So, how do you get that custom look without the custom price? The answer is filler strips. When individual cabinets are installed, there are frequently gaps between the walls and sides or backs of the units. Filler strips are sections of wood that are finished to match the rest of the cabinet material to fill in the spaces between walls or other appliances, leaving it looking custom and polished.

What Are Cabinet Filler Strips?

Cabinet filler strips make spaces between installed cabinetry and walls, appliances, or each other disappear. Sometimes, they cover intentional spacing to allow corner cabinets to have room for the door to open completely. Though they are typically wood, they can be made of any material from laminate to plastic and other mediums to match the surrounding cabinetry. Since the idea is to create a seamless transition between the cabinet and walls or ceiling, the strips must match perfectly.

Filler strips are typically 3/4-inch-thick strips at 3 or 6-inches wide. The length may vary, most commonly between 30 and 80 inches. That gives installers or homeowners plenty of room to fill various gaps in cabinets of varying heights or widths. Though normally installed vertically, they can be used horizontally, such as when installing crown molding.

Is There a Difference Between Filler and Panels?

Kitchen fillers and kitchen cabinet filler panels are the same things. They can be used interchangeably but most often are called panels when they are installed parallel to the cabinet. Filler is the term often used for filling a perpendicular gap between the wall and cabinet. It may even be called trim, where it fills the gap between an appliance and a cabinet.

When Do You Need Kitchen Fillers?

If you see a gap anywhere, you likely need a filler. There may be perfectly good reasons for the additional space, such as:

  • The specific cabinet sizes do not fill the space: Many prefabricated or off-the-shelf cabinets come in only a few designated sizes. In this case, you may need to add distance between them to make it look right for the room, wall, or a non-moveable feature like a window or door.
  • You need to leave space for a door or drawer: The recommended distance between a wall and a door cabinet is 2″, while a drawer cabinet should have at least 3/4″. Using a filler disguises the intentional gap left for functionality.
  • When walls are not square: It may come as a surprise to some, but it is not unusual for walls to be out of plumb or not perfectly square. If you have ever tried to hang wallpaper using the ceiling or the intersection of two walls as a starting point without a level, you’ve likely experienced the frustrating realization. The same is true with cabinets. Once they are hung, you will most likely have gaps where filler will be needed.

You can minimize the number of panels or filler strips needed in a kitchen with careful planning. It may take a few tries to get the layout right before installing, but the ideal configuration would leave the filler only on the ends or around appliances. No matter the need, filler panels can take your kitchen from cost-efficient to custom-looking without the cost.

How To Install Cabinet Filler Panels

Kitchen fillers installation isn’t difficult for experienced installers. As with anything, it takes careful planning to ensure they have the right measurements before cutting and installing to get the best results:

  • After cutting the filler panels, the installer will cut scrap wood such as a 2×4. for blocking.
  • The installer will ensure the screws are long enough to attach the panel to the blocking but no longer than the width of the two, then attach the blocking to the back of the panels.
  • They will then place the filler with blocking into the gap, making sure it is square, then line the back edge of the panel up with the front edge of the frame to keep the panel flush with the cabinet doors. Otherwise, it will end up recessed, and it will not have the custom look you are expecting.
  • Finally, the installer will fasten the cabinet to the blocking from inside the cabinet. Take the time to align the screws so that it looks nice when the doors are opened.

You can get a beautiful, high-end, finished look in your kitchen even if you don’t have the budget for custom-made cabinetry. It just takes going the extra mile and ordering your kitchen filler to match your cabinets.
