Feeling Claustrophobic While Cooking? Here are 4 Ways to Truly Open Up Your Kitchen

Many of us feel a little claustrophobic in the kitchen. And short of physically removing the walls, expanding the floor space and rebuilding the walls, there’s not a lot you can do to increase the size of your kitchen.

Luckily, there are ways to make your kitchen look bigger!

1. Remove the doors from the upper kitchen cabinets.

It’s just an illusion, but the visibility deeper into the cabinets reminds you that the walls aren’t quite as close as you think.

2. Add mirrors to the walls.

Like removing the doors to the upper cabinets, it’s all an illusion — but it’s highly effective at making you think and feel as though the room is at least twice as big as it really is. As an added bonus, you get to check yourself out while cooking, and everyone knows that the chef is the most attractive person in any restaurant…

Pro design tip: line the inside cabinets’ walls with mirrors. They will look like passageways to Narnia.

3. Get rid of things you don’t use regularly.

You don’t have to throw them out or donate them, necessarily, but get them out of the kitchen.

(But do consider donating them, especially around the holidays. Be honest, how many cans of food do you see that you’ve never touched that are still good to eat?)

4. Remove the upper cabinets entirely.

If cabinets are blocking your view into other rooms, have them taken down. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how, suddenly, the rest of the family gets involved in dinner prep. It also lets you join conversations or watch TV shows previously obstructed by those upper cabinets.
